Looking for a quick and easy way to refresh your room décor? Adding in some decorative throw pillows is one of our favorite ways to add a splash of color and variety to your room. You can mix and match, move them around from room to room, and switch them up depending on the season or holiday, and they can truly add so much to a space!
To help you get the most out of your decorative pillow décor, we’ve put together our top tips to help you style your pillows like an interior designer.
We just released our brand-new collection of decorative throw pillows! We kept some of our best sellers and added in lots of new designs too. All of our pillows are handcrafted and feature unique and beautiful detailing.
Mix and match the textures
An easy way to add style and dimension to your space is to pair together decorative pillows with different textures. Pairing, say, a faux fur pillow with some cotton throw pillows, or a sequined cushion with a velvet pillow is an easy way to bring instant style and depth to your space.
You can also mix and match the shape of your pillows. Pairing a square pillow with a circular pillow or a large pillow with a smaller pillow is a great way to keep things looking interesting and not too staged or uniform.
Consider the size
Throw pillows come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, so you want to be mindful of the space you’ll be using them in when you’re choosing the right pillows. Our square pillows, for example, range from 18x18 in. to 22x22 in., and that may not sound like much of a difference, but it’s surprising how much a difference of 4 in. can make.
A pillow that’s too small can be swallowed up by the piece of furniture, while a pillow that is too big will look awkward and out of place. Large couches are best suited to larger pillows, while armchairs, beds, and benches typically do better with smaller pillows, though of course this varies depending on the piece of furniture.
Consider the style of your room
Throw pillows can really help to tie together the look and style of your space, so you want to choose pillows that match the overall feel of the room. If you’re styling a formal living room, for example, you may want to go with heavier, more luxurious materials and styles, like velvet, tassels, or silk. If your room has a soft neutral tone, stick with similar shades, or if you’re going decorating a cottage or beach house, choose pillows with a fun nautical theme.
Decorative pillows are the kind of décor item that are easy to make as an impulse purchase, but before you buy, take a moment to consider if the pillow will really go with your room’s décor.
Choose the right number of pillows
As a general rule, an odd number of throw pillows looks more modern, while an even number of throw pillows looks more traditional (this applies to most décor items), so choose the number of pillows you want based on the style you’re going for. Of course, rules are meant to be broken, but this is something to play around with and keep in mind.
